The Holy Spirit gift of tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It’s main purpose and benefit is to draw you into a closer fellowship and walk with God. That’s why we hear in 2 Corinthians 14:13, “the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all..” The Holy Spirit is given for fellowship with God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Being baptized in the Holy Spirit, and receiving the gift of tongues enhances that beautiful fellowship.
1 Corinthians 14:2 says, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God..” Some people ridicule tongues and minimize the fact that we are speaking
to God rather than men. But speaking to God one on One is the greatest privilege we can ever have. We’ll be doing this forever!
Also, the Holy Spirit in us helps us pray when we don’t know how to pray. He prays with “groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). This is very close personal prayer going on within us. The Holy Spirit is praying exactly in the will of God. (V. 27). The Father knows what the mind of the Holy Spirit is.
Most Christians have not yet grasped what this beautiful gift of tongues is about. This gift has been given to you to draw you closer and closer to God.
